Ebooks vs Print

I’ve always had a love for writing and reading, I don’t think I could be who I am if I didn’t. But it wasn’t until I reached the fourth grade that I discovered this fact about myself.

So yeah, I own a Nook Color. The weirdos gave it to me, I have been reading a book on it for pleasure and one for class. And let me just say how satisfying it was to push that confirm button and end up with a book before me…it was 2 in the morning. I should admit this now, but I am horribly addicted to online shopping. Thank goodness I don’t have any credit cards or I’d be in serious trouble. I enjoy ordering things online it’s the waiting process that I hate…anyway. So of course the ability to purchase a book in my pajamas and get it within minutes is pretty awesome. Also, I can watch Netflix…that has nothing to do with books or reading but is still is pretty awesome. Not to mention I can carry multiple books with me. This is great for school…minus the part where I can’t sell any books back. But let’s be honest, I’m lucky if I get five bucks back for the novels I buy for lit classes. Some teachers want me to get certain versions of the books so I won’t be able to use the Nook but for the ones I can it will be nice. This does not mean nor will it ever mean that I will stop buying hard copies of books. Nothing could ever stop me from that. Click the books or the, I pledge to read the printed word button on my sidebar. Speaking of books, I have tons of things to read at the moment but last week I picked up the book, The Underachiever’s Diary and I’m loving it so far. Bought it at Half Price for a dollar. Love Half Price. And it’s moments like these that I will always enjoy buying and reading the printed word.

Nook or Kindle? How do you feel about Ereaders, or books for that matter? Also, if you’re in Houston in the month of April then you must come to The Indie Book Fest. If you’re a bookstore owner, self published author or small press owner and are interested in getting a table I can also help you with getting you on the right list, let me know. Just shoot me an email at Kim at mind-speaks dot com.

Thanks for reading.

I highly doubt that most textbooks will be available in ebook format anytime in the next 10 years. I think the publishers and colleges want to justify making us pay $150 or more for a big, thick book as long as they can.

It took me a while to give in and get a Samsung Tablet, which I read e-books on. I like being able to easily read in different lighting (for example, if my husband has fallen asleep in bed but I can’t). It’s also nice to easily carry several books around in case you finish the one you’re on. At the same time, though, you can just pick up a book and not thinking about the battery getting low.

Also, I added your link to a new “favorite blogs” section on my blog’s sidebar. Please let me know if I haven’t written your name or your blog’s name in the way you prefer.

@Robin, First of all. Thank you!!! I feel really special that you added me to your sidebar. And thank you for always coming back and reading my blog.

I agree with you. It’s nice being able to carry more than one book and you are able to read in different lighting so as not to disturb anyone. It is so convenient. And some teachers are actually requiring you to spend the exact same amount on a big text book but it is an online text, but you are given the option of buying a hard copy that you may sell back at the end of the semester. -.- It all depends.

I’ve had my Kindle for over a year now and I really do love how easy it is (and less expensive) to buy books! Its also nice not to have to lug around a large book in my purse. The only thing I don’t like about it is that if I don’t read in awhile (which happens because I read kind of sporadically) and discover that the battery on it has died out. That’s one thing that never happens with paper book =P haha

@Melanie, Yup, dead batteries are never a problem with hard copy books. Didn’t even think about that when making my vlog. XD

    Thanks for reading/commenting.

I held out on getting an ereader for way too long, but I did get a kindle a few years ago, and absolutely love it. I read even more because of it. Love it!

Have fun at the indie book fest, I’m jealous, sounds like a fun time!

@Faith Yeah, if it wasn’t a gift I probably wouldn’t have gotten one. But I am glad I have one now.
Thanks for reading and commenting. 🙂

I finally caved and bought a Kindle a while ago. I got the old version without the touch screen and all the extra features. I love it! I still read printed books way more often though. I like the process of going to the bookstore, and picking up the books. It’s more fun than perusing through the Kindle store. But on the other hand, it sure does come in handy when I can’t get to a bookshop and need something to read ASAP! : )

@Kristen, Yes! I love going to bookstores. I love browsing the shelves until I find something that grabs my attention. This is why we are pen pals. Did you get my second card? I sent it way before Christmas. 🙂
As always thanks for reading and commenting.

Yes I did get your last letter. I had a reply written out but I moved again. Packed everything up in a very hurried and unorganized fashion, and I can’t find the reply letter I wrote. I think I’ll give up looking and just write a new one. So far, I haven’t been very good at this pen pal thing, but I promise I’m working on that! (ohhh, maybe I’ll make that one of my new year resolutions!) : D

@Kristen, Moving is a pain and then settling in can be pretty exhausting as well. So no rush. Remember there are no set rules to this. Just reply when you can. :3

I love reading but I’m not a fan of e-readers even though my dad got us all Kindle Fires for Christmas two years ago.

I guess it’s very personal to me because e-readers are the main reason my mom lost her job. She was an executive for Borders Books but the surge of e-readers put them out of business.

Other than that though, I love holding a book in my hand.

@Joy, I was so sad when Borders closed down. I’m sorry to hear about your mother’s job.

There’s just something about flipping through the pages of a good book. I love using bookmarks. Plus once I finish reading a book, I feel so accomplished. XD

Thanks again for reading and commenting. 😀

I already have trouble reading the computer screen so, no e-books for me though it is very, very tempting to buy one just to watch movies.

I will always read real books plus I like how they are designed, all pretty and sometimes even with embossed covers.

anyway, just dropping by from Better Blogger Network/aspiring fiction writers group. have a sweet day.

@lissa, So tempting!!! I watch Netflix on it while I wash dishes. It’s nice having something so compact, yet not something so small as a cell, that can allow me to watch Netflix.
I watch movies in bed too, even though I should be reading my books for class. >.< I agree as well on the design of books. The covers help me decide on reading a book. Which is why I must buy a paperback copy of The Marriage Plot. Love that cover. Thanks for reading and commenting. 🙂

Haha for some reason that “I’m glad I don’t have credit card on my own (yet)” applies to me as well. I think if I have one, I’ll keep on using it for online shopping too. ugh, not helping that I’m addicted to seeing collectible figurines 😛
Hard copies are always better in my opinion. I don’t like and I’ve had enough people telling me to just go get an iPad or something because ebooks are everywhere. heh. they just don’t understand the addiction a bookworm feels haha. I won’t read ebook/pdf files unless I’m really in a rush like…if I NEED to read the story asap or I’ll keep on thinking about it 24/7. Normally, I’ll try to find the hard copy yeap. The feeling of papers and printed ink is just love.
I have so many books waiting too…sigh. currently in the middle of reading Jodi Picoult’s house rules and soon, I’ll read John Green’s – either the paper town or will grayson one.

@Shiki, Yeah, I thought the same thing about ereaders as well. I still plan on buying hard copies, not even the convenience the nook brings me will change that. XD

I’ve read Paper Town, I enjoyed it. I have An Abundance of Kathrine but still haven’t found time to read it. :/
