Inside Kimmy's Mind » Közi

Közi

Közi is the sweetest cat in the world. We’ve had him for about 6 years and he just fit right in with us.. He’s a fatty but a gentle giant. Unlike the diva Misto, Közi has never been aggressive towards us. He’s just a really great cat and I love him to pieces.

Disclaimer: What I write from this point on is just me venting and I apologize to any dog owners.

Monday night I was editing a new haul video and I was interrupted by a sound outside my window. I heard barking and growling and figured it was the neighbors dogs being a nuisance as always. But they sounded too close to my window and sounded way too angry. So I went downstairs and noticed my dad was already outside and yelling. I joined him outside and noticed Közi was tangled up in the trunk of a tree, covered in blood. I, being the weakling that I am, immediately start tearing up. I then hear my dad say,”He’s hurt bad.” These two dogs had mauled Közi and if dad hadn’t stopped them they would have killed him. They were boxers and they had collars on. Now I don’t want to sound like an asshole because not all dogs are a menace. My best friend has a boxer and that dog is incredibly sweet. Even though I am extremely angry at these dogs for hurting my cat I can’t blame them. What I can do is blame their owners for not properly making sure their dogs were securely put away. Now I know it’s bad for me to hate these dogs but I do. And I can say I will never be a dog owner. After being mauled he was in such a state of shock he didn’t seem to notice his own tail was barely hanging on by threads. Közi is a mute. He does not meow. On occasion he squeaks but that’s about it. So if he was in pain he wasn’t showing it.  We couldn’t see the extent of his injuries but my dad told me to get on the phone and start calling emergency vets. But of course living in a small town there are no 24 hour animal hospitals. I call my sister Mija, because she is who I call when I’m upset, and she starts making some calls. Her and the bro in law even drove down to pick us up and take him to the hospital. When they arrived dad lifted Közi to put him the kitty carrier and that was when I was blinded by red. I didn’t even need to get a good look at it- seeing the red was enough to know his injuries were serious. Once making it to the hospital they whisked him away to inspect his injuries. It took forever for the doctor to meet with us. I kept thinking the worse. I mean I never expected to lose one of my cats so soon after losing Willow. And Willow was only with us for about a week, that’s nothing compared to six years. The doctor finally met with us and let us know that the tail was not as serious as the injury to his groin area. It would have to be cut off but she was more concerned about his lower abdomen. The dogs from hell really tore into him. The doctor was worried about his urethra being torn which would cause a world of more problems. There was no 50% chance of him not making it after these surgeries. He would be fine after recovering from his surgeries.

So he’s been in the hospital since Tuesday morning. And he is miserable. The surgeries went well but he’s still in a great deal of pain. He has these tubes sticking out of his back that are there to make sure everything is flowing like it should. We went to see him twice but he showed no recognition, that makes sense because he was knocked out by a shit load of pain killers.  Seeing him shaved and knocked out of course was heartbreaking. I just wish this never happened and every time I look at these pictures of him I can’t help but cry. Now I know some people may argue with me, “So what? It’s just a cat.” I don’t give a fuck what you think. Cat or dog. If you call yourself an animal lover then seeing any animal in pain should be a difficult matter. But if you can stand there and tell me that a cat is less significant than any dog, then you shouldn’t be allowed to own any type of animal. Now I don’t hate dogs, I even considered owning a dog sometime in the future.  I just really hate seeing my cat suffering. Bottom line is, this shouldn’t have happened. He was in his own yard minding his own business when these two dogs started attacking him. I really don’t want to blame it on the breed. But once they taste blood whose to say this won’t happen again? If their owners took better care of them then they would have trained them or monitored them. We are expecting the dog owners to pay the hospital fees and that is it. It is up to the city if they require the dogs to be put to sleep. Now I wouldn’t wish that on any pet owner. But if they show no remorse then why should I show any? And I would hate for this to happen again to another pet or possibly even a small child. After we finish with the hospital and all the paper work we will write a formal letter letting them know they need to pay the fees. If they do not respond in 10 ten days then my dad is fully prepared to sue them. He’s pissed off. We don’t want more than what is needed to pay off the hospital. I really hope my cat will be able to return to his normal self. The doctor told us that Közi was actually being aggressive the second day. He’s never been aggressive to anyone before, but all things considered it is understandable. I mean he’s been poked, prodded, shaved and cut. Oh and not to mentioned mauled by two scary dogs and taken away from the only place he’s ever known as home. So he’s beyond uncomfortable. The doctor said his aggression is due to all of those things listed above and because he is in an unknown place with people he does not know. Pain added with fear is really not a good combination. He’s depressed and has no appetite. He does not like tuna or any other form of soft cat food. He’s missing some teeth so he should be eating it but he just can’t stand it. So my mom bought him this kibble that has a tender middle and he loves it. So we took him some and hope to hear that he ate some. He hasn’t eaten since before the attack. And cats can get quite sick if they do not eat. Again, if you can look at that picture above and still think, so what it’s just a cat, then I have no patience for people who think that way and I hope to god you are not an animal owner.

Sorry for such a depressing post. But this is what has been happening this week. He should be able to come home on Friday but he might have to stay a few days at my sister’s place just until they take out the tubes. And then he can go home. I also hope he will feel more comfortable once he gets home. I think that’s all he needs, a familiar place. For cats it’s all about territory. I hope everyone else has a great week. I’ll keep updating on his progress.

Reading this made me so sad…I am so sorry about Kozi and I hope he recovers soon and is able to be his normal self again. And I understand where you are coming from about dogs. I think owners (especially owners of breeds with violent tendencies) need to be diligent in making sure they are trained correctly and looked after. I hate the type of owner that seem to think everyone is a dog person and that their dog can do no wrong. Like I’ve been in situations where there is a huge dog barking and jumping on me, and I’m told they’re “just playing”….totally disregarding the fact that I’m completely uncomfortable and afraid.

@Melanie, Yeah big dogs make me uncomfortable. Unless they are well behave and aren’t trying to push me down. I’m actually not sure if the boxer breed is violent or not. So far I’ve heard they are not so if they are aggressive it is the owners fault. And breed doesn’t exactly matter. Any dog could just turn around and attack something smaller than them. I just wish this never happened. Thanks for your kind words and for always reading and commenting. :3

@Melanie, I am a dog lover and I can’t stand owners like that, either. My dog has a very quiet, gentle, “softie” personality, so it pisses me off when people insist that I let their dog “play” with her.

OMG I am so sorry about Kozi, I hope he completely recovers. As for the dogs I hope the owners pay and the dogs are put down. I’m not a dog hater, in fact I love most dogs, but if that is how they act then they obviously are not trained and the owners are not acting responsibly. I think there should be stricter rules for people who have dogs.

@Lu, If the owners are not punished for not being more responsible then I fear this might happen again. And I would hate for someone to experience this. I feel bad that the dogs also have to pay, but I care more for my cat and every time I look at him I don’t exactly feel bad for the dogs. Sad I know. But I’m just angry.
Thanks for your concern and for commenting and reading.

@Jen, He came home on Friday. He’s definitely looking a lot happier. I’m just still worried about his lack of appetite.

I am trying not to ‘hate’ dogs because of this incident but seriously, people who do not train their dogs are assholes.

What if it was a kid who got hurt?

    Our poor sweet Kozi. I love him so much and hope he is feeling better by the time he gets home ;o;

@Mija, I’m feeling a bit better after seeing him Friday. But I’m still worried about him. I just hope he doesn’t have to go back to the vet until he gets his stitches out.

Ohhhh I am so sorry, Kimmy! I may be more of a dog person than a cat person, but I have had a couple of cats in my lifetime and I loved them dearly. I would be absolutely devastated if anything like this happened! I sincerely hope that poor little Kozi recovers quickly! Poor little kitty! I send lots of love and support your way!

It makes me so mad that those dogs were out loose! I guess you can’t really blame the dogs because they’re just following their natural instincts, but the owners should have trained them! Or at least made sure they weren’t roaming free! I hope they pay up, because they are 100% responsible.

@Kristen, I’m really not a dog hater. I’m just more of a cat person. Their sometimes snobby attitude is easier for me to handle verses a hyper dog. I really admire dog owners for being able to keep up with owning a dog. Cats are more easier in a sense that they don’t typically require a lot attention…unless they just had a major surgery. The owners of the boxers really shouldn’t have been dog owners. Thank you for your kind words, I really appreciate it. :3

I’m so sorry this happened and that it made you feel bad about dogs. That being said, I certainly respect that some people are “cat people”. I am NOT a “kid person” at all and I know I hate it when people try to push kids on me, so I would not want to make a non-“dog person” feel the same way.

@Robin, I feel the same about kids actually…I guess I’m not a fan of kids that behave badly and their parents just let them do whatever they want. But thanks so much for understanding and for reading and commenting.
